Chrome’s Dark Mode – How To Turn It On

The dark UI design is preferred by most users over the light one due to reduced eye strain and lower battery consumption.

Almost all apps now offer a dark design option. This is called ‘Dark Mode’ or ‘Night Mode’.

Dark mode can also be toggled on or off in new Android versions such as Android 9 and 10 so all apps with variant designs are affected.

The Chrome browser also has an alternative dark mode design, in addition to the light mode design which is common. We will demonstrate how to enable and disable the dark mode(s).

The following steps explain how to enable and disable light and dark mode:

  1. Launch the Google Chrome web browser
  2. Select the three-dots icon (Options) at the top of the screen
  3. Select ‘Settings’ from the drop-down menu

  1. Click on the ‘Theme’ tab under the ‘Basics’ tab

  1. There should be three options available to you

  • SYSTEM DEFAULT: Your device automatically switches between light and dark modes depending on your theme settings
  • LIGHT: It changes the theme of your browser no matter what setting you have on your system.
  • DARK: The browser switches to a dark theme irrespective of your system settings.

Based on what you want, you can choose from any of the above options.
